Santa Lucia celebration

Hi fairies,

today’s post is a bit off topic because it’s not about makeup, nail art or beauty, it’s about a celebration I love , and actually it’s not totally off topic because it’s about magic, and magic is one of the main ingredients of my blog and of life itself!

In Sweden Santa Lucia’s celebration is one of the biggest celebrations of the year, and it’s the last one before Christmas. Santa Lucia was a Christian martyr who died in 304 AD , and there are many legends surrounding her but no one knows what the real story was unfortunately; to me one of those that make more sense is the story that pictures Lucia as a young Christian girl who helped fellow Christians hidden in the catacombs by bringing them food, and as it was dark inside Catacombs, she put candles around her head to be able to see and to carry food at the same time.

Santa Lucia’s day (lucia dagen) is celebrated on the 13^th of December with a procession led by a girl dressing in a white dress and a crown of candles on her head. Small children use electric candles but from about 12 years old, real candles are used! The crown is made of Lingonberry branches that represent new life born in winter. Just behind Lucia there are the star boys carrying stars on sticks and wearing tall paper cones on their heads. Schools normally have their own St. Lucia's , and so have each public place, many offices have their own Lucia, every church has got it and so on.  Lucias also visit hospitals and old people's homes singing a song about St Lucia and handing out 'Pepparkakor', ginger bread cookies.

A popular food eaten at St. Lucia's day are 'Lussekatts', St Lucia's day buns with saffron and raisins, shaped like curled up cats where raisins represent their eyes; you drink glögg with them , which is a warm , spicy wine, similar to Italian vin brulè.

Every child wants to be Lucia, and the competition is really hard! When the procession is walking, singing carols, holding candles , the mood is magical and festive , you have to see it to really get how magical it is!

Il post di oggi è un po’ fuori tema , infatti non tratta né di trucco, né di nail art né di prodotti cosmetici, parla di una festività che amo,e a pensarci bene non è poi così fuori tema , perché tratta di magia, e la magia è uno degli ingredienti principali del blog e della mia vita!
In Svezia Santa Lucia è una delle celebrazioni più sentite, ed è quella che precede il Natale. Santa Lucia era una martire cristiana morta nel 304 AD, e intorno alla sua figura sono nate molte leggende, tutte suggestive, ma nessuno sa quale sia la verità purtroppo; secondo me una delle storie che sembra più credibile è quella che la descrive come una giovane ragazza che aiutava i cristiani nascosti nelle catacombe portandogli del cibo, e dal momento che all’interno delle catacombe era buio, lei indossava delle candele intorno alla testa, in modo da avere le mani libere e poter trasportare il cibo.

Santa Lucia (Lucia Dagen) si celebra il 13 dicembre e la processione è guidata da una ragazza vestita di bianco e con una corona di candele intorno alla testa. I bambini usano le corone di candele elettriche, ma dai 12 anni in su si usano candele vere! La corona è fatta di ramoscelli di mirtilli rossi che simboleggiano la nuova vita che nasce in inverno.subito dietro Lucia sfilano i bambini con le stelline in mano, gli star boys, che indossano un cappello di carta a forma di cono. Ogni scuola ha la sua processione, così come ogni posto pubblico, molti uffici organizzano la processione, e anche le chiese e così via. Le processioni visitano le case di riposo e gli ospedali, cantando canzoni tradizionali e offrendo i tipici biscotti allo zenzero che si mangiano in questo periodo, i pepparkakor.

altri dolci tipici di santa Lucia sono i “lussekatts” , che si infornano proprio il 13 di dicembre, e sono dei dolcetti arricchiti con zenzero e uva passa, a cui si dà la tipica forma a clessidra, che rappresenta un gatto raggomitolato su se stesso, con gli occhi rappresentati dall’uva passa. Si mangiano accompagnati dal glögg , un vino caldo e speziato che ricorda il vin brulè. 

Ogni bambino vuole essere Lucia nella processione, e la competizione è molto accesa! Quando sfila la processione, cantando canzoni tipiche, con le candele intorno alla testa e i vestiti bianchi, l’atmosfera si fa magica e festiva, bisogna vederla dal vivo per rendersi conto di quanto sia suggestiva!
